The Digit Story

Digit helps you save money without having to think about it. It automatically puts aside what you can afford, helping non-savers start saving. When I first engaged with Digit, it was entirely SMS-based, so much of the design was for the interaction and text of messages. This was deceptively difficult and detailed work!

For example, the process of design for the “account balance” message started with the system generated text from banking partners.

I only have the one checking account (with direct deposit) so I only really care about my available balance, and what changed recently. The “BAL” is there to remind me that the text command to see my balance is BAL, but I just did that, and other actions are…?

Here it is cleaned up a bit...

...maybe it could even be a whole sentence (more like a person talking to you)?

That also gives us some room to add a next step…

Now I have a good idea of what is happening and what has changed recently, and I’ll probably use this to keep tabs on my account, since it’s faster and clearer than what I get from my bank (where I have to open and/or log in to a bank app).

Now that we have helped people, we can help them more by making this an occasion to save money, something they know they should be doing.

This process repeated itself many, many times over, for each part of the experience.
